The NHS-Galleri trial checks for the earliest signs of cancer through a blood test

What is the Galleri® test?

The Galleri® test looks at DNA markers from a simple blood sample to see if any of it may have come from cancer cells. The test can pick up the signal for more than 50 types of cancer, including those for which there are no screening programmes such as stomach or lung cancer. However, the test does not detect all types of cancer. If a cancer signal is found, the results can point to where in the body the cancer is. However, the signal does not mean that a person definitely has cancer. It just means that they might have cancer, and they will need to have some follow-up tests to check.

Who can take part in the NHS-Galleri trial?

People aged between 50 and 77, who live in a region of England where the trial is being run are able to participate. Individuals are able to register to volunteer if they have:

  • Not been diagnosed with cancer in the last 3 years, or
  • Not been treated for cancer within the last 3 years; or
  • Those who are currently having tests (or waiting for tests) due to suspected cancer
